I was imagining it was something of a literary trick to "surprise" us that other beings could be "human" in every sense bar the physicality.

If the whole thing was universal do something else, go really alien, but, it is a children's book so characteristics need to be recognisable, and really out there alien would be difficult work as a plot device, like the Spyglass is a device, a way to show the reader dust is throughout all worlds.
