Yeah, on the Max HR front. Again I topped out at 163bpm.

Am I just a freak and have a low WHR? I hope not that would give me 70% of 129 and 85% of 146. Shirley that cannot be correct? I can't run at 129bpm, breaking wind would make my heart flutter that high.

Any sageful advice?

Hi all, have finally got my head round the figures and have worked out some kind of plan for the next three weeks to try to get used to training by bpm instead of pace.

Well done Features & Ep good to see success stories.
Fisrt run with this tomorrow night (monday), see how we go.

Features, sounds like you had a cracking race, great finish and support, well done.

Today I went out for a 3 miler easy but walking up to my start point I thought I would try for an 85% 172bpm. I done the first mile in 08:29 167bpm,I thought I won't keep this up so jogged for .2m and then decided on 1/2m intervals with jogs in between,so it went
1m 08:29 167bpm, 1/2m 04:11 166bpm, 1/2m 03:40 169bpm, 1/2m 03:58 170bpm overall AHR 165 including the jogs overall distance 3m
Was a bit dissapointed I didn't get up to 85% but according to the monitor I have a new max by 5 beats 199 but I will ignore it this time and stick to 194.

Just wanted to let you know what HR tarining has done for me in 6 weeks. 11 weeks ago I did a HM and died at 10 miles and walked/run for the last 3 to get home in 2:16:37.

After six weeks solid training of long and short HR runs coupled with 3-4 miles tempo's and intervals I arrived at Norwich HM yesterday feeling good for a sub 2. What you said Hellen above really made sense, solo tempo runs are bloody hard but I set off yesterday averaging 8:32 and felt really good. The average slipped in couple of miles but running with my HRM on for the first time I knew where I needed to be. I ended up astonishing myself in coming home in 1:52:50, 23 mins off my PB from just 11 weeks ago. I averaged 8:41mm and my WHR was 85%. The only time I really had to dig deep was the last mile going up into the showground but even then I picked off at least 50 people and nobodycame past me. Thighs are sore today but I cannot begin to tell you how chuffed I am. Thanks for all your help guys, I think I will stick around here a while longer!

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
