Girlie, I had a similar problem, though not sure if it was "runners' knee". I went to the physio and they gave me quad strengthening exercises. Shot shoes were the cause; changed them and all was fine. This may not be the case for you but it's worth considering (I aways know when my shoes are shot when I start getting niggles - though I obviously keep a track of miles too; I just never get close to 500 like everyone else seems to).

Its not the shoes. It is a result of NY marathon. Have seen Mrs Massage twice since then and she has dealt with Quads etc. It seems to be respondign to the treatment, although is a little dore this mornign, but wasn't yesterday. Going to test it next weekend, either at a 5k Santa dash or more likely a short mince round the block here.

Hang in there and take it easy - it sounds like you're being sensible though. Be patient.

Patience isn't one of my virtues! neither is beign sensible! However there are too many people ready to nag if I don't follow the plan!

Hoping to be fit for the NYE at Ely. Will definitely be doing that, even if I have to mince round slowly!

The Jogger
Well, went out and did a 3 miler AHR 146 pace 10:53 , should have been a lot fresher as I have just had 2 days off but was a bit tired and slow also calf was tight. The positves were a mileage pr for the month by 6m 136m. For Nov AHR 147 68%ish Av Pace 11:04 so not complaining too much, well trying not too :-)

hi everyone this is my first post on this thread so please excuse me for jumping in on your conversations I just want a bit of advice from you all heres my story so far I have had a HRM for over a year now and not really used it or known how to use it until I bought the complete idiots guide I have been following the beginners 12 week plan for 6 weeks now I have noticed a slight difference in my heart rate compared with week 1 but not a drastic difference I have done a few 10ks my first was last in sept 2006 which I did in 1:07:00 my last which was the liverpool 10k I did in 57.15 which I was pretty pleased with I would like to improve more if possible. The question I have is that I am doing the wilmslow half marathon next March and this plan finishes in 5 weeks what would you suggest I do from xmas till march. I am currently training 5 days a week which I can cope with at the moment the plan puts me on a six day week next week Ill see how it goes what would you suggest do the same 12 weeks again but up the mileage slightly or look for a plan specifically for a half marathon. I hope ive not gone on to much hears a few details about me to be going on with.

Age 48
max heart 186
resting HR 59

oops

Firstly - excellent progress in reducing your 10k time by a minute per km.
That's fabulous!
Training the number of days you are makes things a lot easier, but I'm not at my PC at the mo
Can you add me (and IanM and Hendo, and anyone else whose advice you like on the thread) as buddies, as it would be helpful to see the details of your training to advise you!

Alanbh-Welcome to Fetch! The Parker novice plan is for a 10k so my first thought is start to include a longer run, building up to around 2 hours so you get used to the time on your feet prior to the race. The others are far more experienced and will be able to give you better advice though.

Welcome to Fetch Alan. The advice from these guys is fab" I would start HM training in Jan, you will have plenty of time to build the miles.

I don't train as aften as you do, but I tend to keep to more sub 70% runs to build my endurance, which I will be doing again in Jan as part of both Silverstone and FLM training.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
