Bob! It's a complex issue to which there isn't really an easy answer!
A lay off (if not too long) can be like a good rest, and you come back with a real spring in your step.
You get cycles with your training too - where it is sometimes effortless and you seem to be running really easily and with fluidity, and then for no apparent reason - you have a period when it seems more difficult!

Sounds like you are running well, whatever the reason! And that is a Good Thing :)

(Not much help tho - sorry :-/ )

Hellen- I get it on my long runs, usually the last couple of miles for anything upto 15 miles. On the longer, 2 lap runs I was doing I found the 2nd lap drifted quite early on and was significantly slower than the first.

Where is everybody when I need some advice!!!!
Back from a pleasant 5.72 mile run, the furthest since NY and no problems in knee or calf:-)
Avg pace 12:15/mi
Avg Hr 144(68%)
Had to concentrate on Hr today as 70% figure has changed with new RHR. So I forgot about pace and shuffled into an easy, effortless groove. It took a while to get used to the slightly slower rate again in the start, so a few spikes which explains the high avg.

Now what I want to know is, after the marathon am I now back at the start and have to go throught the slow improvement process all over again or will things settle and I stand a chance of actually getting better than I was for NY.
If I am back at the start I don't see how I can ever break the 11:00/mi training barrier as I will get close to it just before FLM to have to start all over then?

I will be concentrating on HR at the moment and let pace sort itself, but it's a bit demoralising to be a full minute slower per mile again.

Girlie - you are not back at the start.
Although you will have gone back a bit, you will pick it up pretty quickly and move on.
The 'training effect' is cumulative. Once again, you just need to be patient!

Following illness earlier in the year, I dropped by 3 min/mile for my 70% pace!!!
It took a few weeks to get back to where I was before that, but in the greater scheme of things, not that long really

Thats ok then ElBee, was gettign concerned I'd have to start over! It's slightly harder now as my 70%figure is now 147 from 148 bpm, because * fanfare* my RHR is now 44!!!!:-) So will have to concentrate to keeping below 70% again rather than think about pace.

girlie, you seem to have de-buddied me!!!
what are your pace/HR for the two laps of one of your long two lappers?

I was looking back in my diary this am, I did ed marathon end of may, initially it took a while to get back to where I was, it was difficult to compare runs as well due to the weather, I went on hols mid july and by then I think I was more or less back to normal, then from mid August I saw improvements. My 70% runs had always been around 10.30/mile sometimes a few secs faster but not that much, even up to just before the marathon they stuck around 10.30, then at mid Aug they suddenly jumped to just a little over 10/mile and stuck around there for about 4 weeks before getting worse again (back at work). So girlie, there is hope for you to improve again

Whoops, not sure how that happened as you were still there on my list. Have deleted and added you again, so you should be able to see my training again.
6 Oct was a 2 lap 20 mile run- Ididn't put the splits down so here they are:
lap 1 avg pace 11:31/mi Avg hr 150bpm(71%)
Lap 2 avg pace 12:21/mi Avg hr 163bpm(80%)

8 September is a good one the lap details are in the notes.

12 mile run home from work @70%-80%HR (Aerobic Zone) time 1hr 52mins 29secs, had to slow down during last 3rd of this run as my legs had other ideas and seemed to want to go faster, glad I kept an eye on HR monitor which really is helping my training and stopping me over train.

I may try a 20 mile 70%HR run tomorrow, I must check my resting HR again for next 3 days

HR training is really paying off for me now, zero aches or pains from legs or feet and thats down to HR training, Norwich Half on sunday is going to be interesting as I plan to try for shiny new PB

Turbo training for me
10 mins at < 70% and cadence of 100 - low gear
5 mins harder (as hard as I could to maintain cadence of 90 and hold the same (higher)gear)
2 mins recovery
1 min as hard as poss
2 mins recovery

THAT was hard work!!!! :)
