Hi - just did a 5M race today, very hard conditions in the cold and wind. Average HR 86%, but average speed(!) 9:50 so quite pleased, and couldn't have gone any faster in the conditions. Think I'm gettting a cold too.

Well done Ian and Ice. That's encouraging. I'm using this method to boost my race paces, but after a really hard tempo run yesterday with a very disappointing time I was starting to lose faith. Hope yesterday's was just a blip.

12mile run home from work today @70%-80%HR (Aerobic Zone) av of 75%HR in time of 1hr 54mins 14secs, enjoyed this session even if the weather was very icy, HR training helped to stop me pushing to hard, could have gone on for longer and no aches or pains

Did 7 miles this morning in 1:14 with an average of 10:32mm. Came in at 68%WHR so really happy with that and it feels like I get stronger with every long tun now at sub70%.

OK so av of 76% is grey but it was a "longer" run for my, not that 6.6m is long but anyway!
When I started running to HR I was running at 14:30 pace and I did my 1st long run of the year 6m at 15mm pace
Today I went out and did 1st mile in under 70% and 11:28!!!! Ok so there was a bit of down hill and the next 2m where slopping upwards all the way! Mile 4 was upwards and HR wa above 70% so I did it harder well the last 2/3m of it harder then mile 5 I pottered but didn't get back below 70 but under 75%. So mile 6 I decided that seeing as it was a lovely day I would prove to my legs I can do fast running when they are tired.
9:41!!!!
85%
now my best ever mile to date was a couple of weeks ago when I did 1m warm up then the 2nd mile mainly downhill in 9:38. This was a flat mile and after 5m so I am well and truely thrilled!!
Gonna enjoy my sunday roast even more now!

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
