Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I hit 194 a couple of weeks back running what I have good reason to think would have been a 5k PB if officially recorded. This is actually dropping, a few years back I could hit 200.

Oh, and my BP is at the top end of ideal, drifting occasionally into high-normal, would probably most easily be fixed by retiring but I can't afford to do that for a long time yet.

There comes a time I would think when the heart can be over stressed; hitting a very high peak briefly I guess is inevitable in some situations but being able to sustain it might be almost impossible. I certainly ran so hard occasionally in my 30s that I would have tunnel vision and blacked out peripheral vision at the end of proper races. I am very wary now (age 72) and stay within zones indicated after doing HR test and they fit into how I feel too. I didn't worry so much about busting a gut and keeling over until I hit the age when my Dad died (68).

Just blogged about introducing additional HR zones:

Your comments on that would be great. Ta.

I've amended the HR bands page, so that you can set your min, max and five points between (Z1 to Z5). As things stand, Z2 and Z4 equate to the easy and threshold points. These values (beyond Z2 and Z4) aren't reflected anywhere on the site yet - but you can play with your values here:

After a week of 48-51 for my RHR, I slept in the garden last night - and got a 44!

Think I've sorted it. Just been on pc and it seems to be easier to adjust on there, you can move the sliders precisely. Easiest to start with the maximum and then work your way down.

As a suggestion, would it not be easier to be able to type in the require4d numbers rather than use the slider?

Isn't the top of Z5 the same as max HR? I think you have one too many values.

I took the values as the start of the zone. That means max is the end of Z5. Garmin bracket each zone with a start and end value so you know.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
