Your race times are not far off my best race times larkim (mine are historical! and I was in my thirties) but I know that the most demanding effort were ten milers and they were "eyeballs out" for me on several occasions--best one was 62 minutes something which isn't recorded here on fetch because I've long mislaid my written log book. I know and recollect well that my HR was high throughout but the most essential element of such efforts was the recovery which was usually quite quick and within ten minutes. On occasion though, in some races I would feel awful for twelve hours after a full out effort; whether this is/was a good thing is debatable, I was constantly chasing pb's.

Anyone here use a Polar H9 heart rate monitor? For some reason, my Polar M430 occasionally has a bit of a problem with my cheap-as-chips CooSpo strap, saying the battery is low (which I don't believe it is, I have changed it a couple of times), and while the message is on screen you can't do anything else, and it doesn't disappear by itself after a while, you have to OK it. So I'm thinking of trying a Polar H9 strap, as it's reasonably priced and I'm not after anything fancy.

Mr. Grumpy
I use a Polar H10, and I’d been having problems with drop-outs, which I put down to the Polar strap being faulty through age (I’d already changed the battery but was still having the problem with drop-outs)

I tried a new non-Polar strap off eBay, and got that very same message that you mentioned, which was the first time that I’d seen it in years of using the H10.

I guess it’s similar to how an iPhone sometimes doesn’t like a non-Apple cable.

My heart rate hit 185 bpm recently on a hilly session with my running club.

It was higher than some of my running buddies, all of similar ages (50's).

Should I be worried? Someone suggested I should get my blood pressure checked.

I've lost about 4 stone over the last few years, and feel fitter than ever.

Worry? Well, did you collapse? If no, then no. Since I got my new hrm last year, I've seen over 185 three or four times. People vary. Tell you buddies that they are not trying hard enough ;-)

Well done on the weight loss and regained fitness :-)

Blood pressure has got naff all to do with heart rate, unless you’re bleeding out.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
