I don't believe any of the issues with "JyawnMan" are caused by him being American. I know and enjoy the company of lots of Americans.

I use HRM more as a gauge of fitness now and for recovery type runs to make sure I don't overdo it.
Today I managed an avg pace of 10:18mm with an avg hr of 72%WHR, which while it is above the magic 70%, most of the run was around that and I am happy that it was easy enough for me.
More importantly my pace has improved and to be able to move that quickly( for me) for such a low effort rate was an impossible dream 12 months ago.

Is running 72 or 73% that bad then?

Baw,

"""""Generally, I've found Americans to be kind, generous and enthusiastic."""""

That describes me exactly:)

For the record, I am definitely not anti American or anti anyone else for that matter. :-)

Has anyone looked into the biomechanical issues that may affect heart rate?? :-)

CY- Depending on which principle you follow some say it should eb below 70% to be truely easy, but trying to stick that rigidly to it makes me unhappy, so I tend to keep around 150bpm which usually comes out around 71-72%

Sallykate - When I started HRM training in 2007 my pace dropped to 11:00=12:00 mm, so for me to get close to 10:00mm is a major achievement.

Jacko we have to draw the line somewhere to make sense of things. Going a bit over isn't going to make any difference probably especially on one run. Guidelines are to be used as well, guides :-)

Within reason of course, if I ran every run at 75% then I probably wouldn't be running easy enough or using the techniques debated on here...

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
