I've a h7. Used it a couple of times - quite bright.
What headtorch you should buy depends entirely on what you need it for.
Running in woods is usually where you need the brightest ones.

I've got the H7R, and I'm very impressed. I've nothing to compare it to as I've never used any other head torch, but I can now easily run the trails I've had to avoid in previous winters. I never need more than about half power until the battery starts to go, and although it is rechargable you can also change over to 'normal' batteries.

I'm going to be moving from the pavements and street lights of NW London to rural Cambridgeshire with no street lights (or pavements) so will be investing in a head torch next month. Having read through this thread will probably start with the alpkit gamma and then 'upgrade' if necessary but from the comments on here it may not be necessary.

might also be worth checking out the new alpkit torch - it has a variable beam a bit like the H7

flanker - it *does* look a bit like something you'd get in a Kinder Egg though

It does it put me off buying one. The gamma isn't much better either..
I now they are keeping their costs down, but...

My alpkit gamma seems to have stopped working over the summer. Have changed batteries to no effect, contacts look clean but it has no life
I have gone back to my petzl tikka, but it feels odd as it casts a sharp shadow about 2ft in front of me

That sharp shadow is why I don't use the Petzl any more, I found it was really messing with my perception of the ground in front of me, it was a very odd experience almost like a cliff had opened up, really horrible experience. I use the Lenser H7 now and it gives a graduated shadow which is much easier to deal with. It's expensive but really very good, and having the separate battery pack is fantastic is it's much easier to carry the extra weight on my back pack than on my head.

Interesting. One of the reasons I got rid of my H14 was that it gave a cone of light that had very defined edges, almost like running down a tunnel of light, and no spread of light to give peripheral vision. Are you saying the H7 doesn't have this problem?
