I read recently about Salazar who broke the WR at NYC many moons ago and the course was subsequently found to be short having been measured on the blue line and not the shortest possible route.
There are also rumours one of the early Londons was short albeit that would be in pre garmin days when you had no reason to doubt the distance

it's also interesting that the statement says the calibration course was short. I wonder how many other races have measured against the same calibration course?

I have an element of sympathy for the organkisers as they put their trust in the measurers.
However, its only an element as they must have known there were doubts and didnt ask.
It does mean my despised GSI event look a bit better as they re-measured a long HM about 6 months after the event and before the next one rather than lket it go for 3 years.

There shouldnt be any sympathy for the organisers, simply riding round the course or using mapmyrun will tell you its short. Ultimately the organisers take responsibility for everything whether thats course, bagage, whatever.

Yep, agree simpleeee, when it's so far short, and thousands of garmin traces agree then should have been sorted after the first year

Not one of those Garmin traces will have been accurate either though. Or if they were it will have been by fluke as I have never seen a garmin trace follow my exact line of running.
What I do agree with is they should have acted sooner, after 2013,when the concerns became clear and especially when repeated in 14.

on a random sample of one run, i.e. my run home from work tonight, in a c1.25 mile stretch I apparently crossed the canal 4 times and for almost a mile was running on the side of the canal where there is no towpath.

Regardless, the garmins were more accurate than the organisers
