it isn't, but we don't have a thread for oddities such as some of like raising.

Whereas I would have interpreted manager in the "performing artiste" sense, which would have put yet a different spin on it. You could have gone for " 'er indoors". ![]() |

I ususally say 'my social secretary', that being the norm around here and therefore scarcely jocular and not clever. I think the answer to my original question is that 'manager' expresses a relationship whereas secretary, steward, butler, household manager etc are jobs. |

there's a report out today about the Tonga volcano in January. One quote is "We were getting lightening rates of up to 5,000 to 5,200 events per minute". the 'up to' and then a range always seems odd to me. Wouldn't "..of up to 5,200 events per minute" mean exactly the same thing? |

^ Yes. '...rates between 5,000 and 5,200...' would give a more informative picture, maybe.

I think perhaps they just know the upper range is somewhere between 5000 and 5200 (or maybe slightly less) but don’t have accurate data.

I agree I'm sure that's what they're trying to say but it just seems a bit clumsy
