Lammo, you jest, but an ultra pal of mine (and K5 Gus's actually) used to mash up potatoes and mince and put the squish lot into a plastic bag, then cut off the corner and squeeze it into his mouth for sustenance on the run. Ewww! G

Another vote for soreen bars. I keep a couple of packets in the freezer for such an occasion. I also make baked oats.

Eight hours! Wouldn't you just stop and have a nice lunch somewhere ?
If I'm going "longer" (ie not actually long) maybe a couple of Fruesli bars and something chocolatey (which may be dark chocolate). Being in Scotland, melting is rarely a problem.

Yorkshire Pie
I love veloforte bars but they're not cheap! A mixture of cut up bars and some shotbloks got me through a 100 mile TT last year.
