Am I being a bit dense, or should the altitude gained on a ride be the same as the altitude lost, if I start and finish at the same place?

My Garmin Edge 130 Plus always seems to be out in one way or another, and the two figures never correspond.

Apologise if this has been covered before, but I'm new to this thread.

jelly Jo, scroll to the ABC widget, press Start to get the compass, altimeter and barometer screen, long-press Up button to get ABC options, press Start, scroll down to Altimeter and press Start, press Calibrate, select Enter Manually and press Start. You can then enter a manual value, which you can find out from a map for where you are. It's handy to check occasionally, if you live near the sea like you and me, because any meters climbing starting in the negative don't count on climbing tables and thus it makes it harder to get badges!

No, Dave, it's altimeters and GPS readings that are dumb. At the best of times, GPS is less accurate vertically than horizontally. Altimeters don't know the difference between a change of weather or change of height. Neither of them refer back to your GPS track to see whether a point reading makes sense in a wider context. Errors in one part are random and systematic (weather) and there is no guarantee they will cancel out exactly in the next part.

Thanks a lot Steve. I know that the tech is getting better, but the readings are still a long way apart. Have to buy some newer tech, in the fullness of time.

Anyone used the pace pro feature on a longer ultra race on their Fenix6 or similar ? I've loaded a race route on for this coming weekend as looked interesting to use the feature although not sure how it will work in practice or how accurate it will be ...........

Kieren
Not for an ultra, or a fenix* but I used it for a 23KM** trail race on default and it was useful for elevation. I'm strong downhill, so ignored it for that and bombed it down.

I mostly run on the flat and don't find it useful at all for that.

*I used a forerunner245.

** I took a wrong turn and ended up only racing the 10K race. Quite a lot of runners did the same. Oops.

The irony being that to use Pace Pro you have to load a route onto the watch ;-)

I did wonder about how Kieren had managed to get lost if following a route ......... ;-) but then in the heat of shorter race "battle" its easy to follow others and not your bleeping watch .........

You don't need to "navigate" the route to use it for pace pro (but... )

I'm considering using pace pro for Fellsman (or at least having it running to see how I feel about it).
