We did loads of different drills when I was learning to swim and then in the more advanced class. I'm adding the ones I remember back to my sessions now that I'm doing 30+ lengths. I had lots of issues with feeling confident in the water as I was a late learner. There's a massive difference between intellectually knowing you can swim and won't drown and the primitive part of you brain that is screaming "you are going to die!" Took me months if not years to be properly relaxed. The good thing is that now I've got it, it comes back almost immediately - even if I haven't swum for a while |

@Nellers i think your right that having swum as a small child is helping you get back to it now. Confidence is key but also children tend to adopt good body positions in the water which helps you remeber them as an adult. If you could see me right now, you'd laugh. I'm currently waving my arms around trying to work out how to describe the 3 sculls to you whilst wearing a dryrobe over sweaty running kit. My builder just walked into the kitchen and gave me a very funny look. (I am having the house renovated and am waiting for the builders to finish so I can go have a soak in the tub. Am living inc sleeping in the kitchen at the moment and only other room i can use is the bathroom) I'm a big fan of drills for really breaking strokes down and fine tuning each bit. I'll be back shortly with some semblance of scull description. |

Absolutely, @Little Nemo . I'm not doing anything "right" or "well" in not feeling that way. I'm just lucky that my kiddie brain was conditioned to it when I was little and some things are never forgotten, I guess.

Lol @Sushi ! That sounds like a nightmare to live in. I hope your builder is an understanding chap! I just did a google and found this: Which I think is demonstrating the one you mean. I reckon that might get a test out next time I'm in the pool with a lane to myself. |

We used to do a mad variation on the one above! You lie face down with your feet pointing the way you want to go. You then move both arms forward in a kind of reverse breaststroke to move while keeping your feet together. It's ridiculously hard and I always imagined that I looked like a squid doing it ![]() Not sure I'm brave enough to do it on my own outside of swimming lessons now... |

@Nellers it kind of what I’m meaning but never seen it done in the weird combo of moving from forward to backward. When his arms are under his body, elbows high, fingers pointing to bottom, that’s scull 2 position. Then move hands out and in like windscreen wipers. I recommend using a pullbouy to keep your legs up and you should move forwards (it’ll be slow) Start with 1/2 length into full stroke and build so you can do scull up swim back. I’ll try and find good videos of all 3 scull positions. |

Scull 1 - works on the front end of stroke catch. I'd recommend the pullbouy in usual position rather than between feet but that may be a preference thing. No sound on this video but diagrams are helpful |

Scull 2 - helping you feel the water in that 2nd phase of the stroke and getting forearms engaged. Same advice re pullbouy. |

Scull 3 - this helps with the end part of the underwater phase of stroke. People often miss the final bit of the 'catch' because there focus is shifting to the hand that is about to enter the water. As a result they miss the final bit of power they can gain just before the hand exits. This drill helps you tune into the 'catch' you can feel if your hand is finishing the underwater phase in the correct position. This demo is slightly different from how I've been taught to coach it but should still work well. It suggests just doing for 1/2 a length before breaking into full stroke. Definitely start with that but we do full lengths with swim back. Hope those links help..... |
