They give it to us in our holiday allowance then say we need to use it on that afternoon and take it back again. I'm taking the other half day off to make it a full day (and indeed the two days before it to turn it into a full week). I'm working between Christmas and new year, but we usually get allowed to go home early on new years eve. All very unofficial and at the discretion of the most senior person in the office. The email only goes to people who are actually in the office, and you can usually expect it shortly after lunchtime. Except last year when I was desperately trying to complete a deal by year end and ended up working until just before 5 anyway.
