Chris, I can't get to Loughborough this weekend (it's a 100 mile round trip) so i'll be going on Friday. There is a path throught the Uni that comes out in the NW corner, if you go SW from there you find hills and woods without crossing any A roads so that's where i'm looking at present.
South coast pete. Yes.

I'll SEE if I can take a look. I did mean south-west, not north-west. Sorry.

Sir Pabsey - Knight of Fetch
If you want to avoid the roads as little as possible there is a track at the south west of the uni campus, grid ref SK516176 which is wide enough for a car. It turns right after 800m but would be a pinch point for people as I think it's a stile.
From that stile you have open paths up to Outwoods and Beacon hill - but again there are stiles and kissing gates along there.

an alternative is to start from 525175 which again is a wide path and there are no pinch points for ages. It's a bit further away - mayby a group warmup jog to the start negates the extra distance?

There are terribly many corners and twists and turns running southwards, istm, but there is a disused railway immediately N of the Uni running track, leading to Garendon Park. It's not so hilly or wooded, but it could be an easier route to marshall. From there a loop along Black Brook, the Soar and back past Hathern looks feasible for up to 10 miles. Five would be a small loop out of Garendon Park. I don't know yet if Garendon Park is open at both ends.

hee hee, just back from my run, got all confused by the N S direction type stuff.
i ran up to the uni and thought, wonder where we coudl go for a 5km route without crossing busy roads and without too many turns so people dont get lost.
I came out of the uni onto the main road (Epinal way) then after a few hundred metres turned left (just past fire station) down what is known as Burleigh track in our running club. This is nice pavements, no cars for about half a mile or so (there is a quiet road crossing). You then get to a busy road with pedestrian crossing and then keep going straigtht on the whole time on what I think is the disused railway C is talking about. No cars, not wide enough for a car, a little muddy underfoot but not too bad, expect it will be fine in Sept.
I did out and back totalling 5km, there were a few quiet road crossings on the disused railway bit. It would prob be possible to come back a different way but that would be on roads and need more marshalling. The out and back woudl need minimal marshalling, infact a few peices of tape would prob be enough and a notice as to where to turn!

Helen, I think you're right about the disused railway. i was thinking it might be possible to get to it straight from the running track in the Uni by crossing the A512. Then I'd suggest starting the race on the "other" side of the road so as not to have a mass road crossing.
Then I'm suggesting running along that cycle track towards the M1. If you turn right where the cycle track ends on the map, that is Garendon Park.
But you run totally S of Lb, and afaik without stiles etc - any easily navigable routes? It would be nice to get out to Swithland Reservoir but it's a rather over ten miles to go round it. Unless we start closer.

C - the 5km out and back was measured from just AFTER crossing Epinal Way. I only looked at 5km as there was talk of a 5km race and thougth it ought to be simple. There were no styles to cross! I didnt get as far as the M1
I think that Garenden park it closed or at least some of it is. There is the Shepshed 7 race and that is the only time they open it up.
I think it would be poss to do Swithand resevoir within the 10 miles. I have a route I do from home occationally which takes me there, think it is less than 10 from home
I must admit to always sticking to the same old routes and sticking to the road as my sense of direction is terrible. I run off road and do woodhouse eaves, bradgate park, swithland etc with running club though. However, I dont remember the route from one week to the next.
If I know I have to sort something out it will force me to branch out!! I am a teacher so loads of time in the summer for route checking!
