Is it really that, if a jewel doesn't touch down at first try, you don't get it for the day?!

If someone has a low score, a load of uncleared bugs, and massive flowerbeds they might be laying the ground for an assault on the leaderboard. Which doesn't mean the flowers aren't fair game, of course.
