It was about time I got rid of the Walnut. I was very close to going back to the knitted green and red snake, but that wouldn't make much sense these days!

I might add my beers tomorrow. I played it a bit safe, there were some quite out there stuff to have, but 10 pubs means I want to enjoy it.....not just go bananas....

Stockport beer and cider festival last night. Very old school. Masonic Hall, spread over 4 rooms, burgers and chips from the kitchen, folk band. Power failure for half an hour.
Beers mainly local(ish), I had a couple of very good ones, as they were local had too look quite hard to find something different!
First fest in years.....

Anyone been/going to GBBF? I was there on Tuesday and have been watching the meltdown from Camra members about Abbot Ale ever since. I don't have an issue with Greene King winning a prize as such but I think that Camra should perhaps review whether the brand a major sponsor of the festival is specifically trying to promote is actually allowed to be a contender for the Champion Beer of Britain anyway or whether if a brewery is a sponsor they should perhaps agree that their beers will be excluded from the competition while they are a sponsor.

I’ve missed that controversy. In my opinion and I guess it is all about opinion GK do a good job in producing so much Abbott of a consistently above average standard but it is nowhere near the best beer in the UK, not even the best beer in Suffolk. One question does the champion beer have to be a nationally available beer?

The champion beer process (as I understand it) is that CAMRA members initially nominate beers on the website that they feel should be put forward. These then go to regional tasting panels who do a blind tasting. The winners of these regional panels then end up also being blind tasted at the GBBF. (I may have over simplified it there but that's roughly how it works). What's perhaps more relevant is that there's more than a slight chance that a pint of Abbot served in a large chain pub (be that Spoons or a GK pub) may not be kept to quite the same standards as at the country's premier beer festival where the 'cellar' staff are not going to let anything go on that's either not quite ready, a bit past its best or hasn't been looked after properly in the first place. Of course a lot of pub landlords do want to serve beer in absolutely top condition but there are also a huge number that serve fairly average condition beer and Abbot is available in a huge number of pubs so by default is probably going to taste average in pubs more often than it tastes fantastic.

I always remember it as blind tasting so there cannot be too many complaints. Abbot gets served on an awful lot of places that don't make a good job of it as Baroness says. I find it one to avoid. I will check last time I had a pint.
