Distant Hills, a brewer in Glossop which is not so far away, looks like they are going to stop Brewing. This is not long after they invested a lot of money in new Brewing equipment and a kitchen! Energy costs it seems... twitter.com |

Announcement This is the twitter messages. I can only see other breweries going the same way! 'We have received a number of messages of concern and support recently, and I know there are a number of rumours about the company going around. I have thought long and hard on what to say. As I’m sure you are all aware breweries have been faced with declining demand due to the cost of living crisis, along with spiralling cost increases. Our cash flows have been pummelled. Whilst we have managed to grow the business with the Tap & Kitchen, get Distant Hills across the country via regional distributors and had an export deal in place that would see Glossop on the continent; it’s a perfect storm and we’ve been no stranger to this. However, I want to bring attention to a particular situation that we have found ourselves in as it needs sharing. We received backdated utilities invoices in the amount of £45k a little while ago, with the supplier, without warning, trying to take the full amount over 4 working days. The business was paying £2400 per month for energy just 16 months ago. We now stand at £8000 per month. I’m not sure how energy suppliers expect small businesses to carry these increases. I have been negotiating with the supplier for a month or so, but unfortunately the support offered by the supplier and industry regulator, OFGEM, is completely inadequate. I would go as far to say ‘woeful’. We still don’t understand why we have even received these, and the utilities provider has been less than forthcoming with an explanation. It seems we are just expected to take it on the chin. Whilst I know this will be disappointing to many, that now means we can no longer trade the brewery as our input costs are unsustainable. Our situation is particularly complex and we are working on a plan for the future. We have a number of exciting opportunities in the pipeline. The Tap & Kitchen will remain open, and will continue to offer great beer alongside banging small plates. We ask that you support us if you can, so that we can push forward through these crazy and worrying times. New Memberships will be on hold until the future is a little clearer, however current membership benefits are of course still redeemable at the Tap & Kitchen. We are working on the yearly membership event and will be in touch with all members shortly I look forward to seeing you at the Tap More on future plans soon Much love, and as always your support is more than appreciated Danny' |

Thats shocking but not entirely surprising. I am sure they are not the only ones in that situation either.

Excellent Saturday in Sheffield. Some very good old school pubs. Kelham Island Tavern, Crow Inn in particular. A couple of relatively average brewery places, with Heist being very good. 10 bars visited over 11 hours, 4 miles walked....
