I played chess, once! The guy teaching me in that first match lost... So he left in a huff never to be seen again. I think he was using teaching me chess for ulterior motives he failed on both counts!
I have a chess board and pieces.
I have always wanted to play chess...
Is this app thing suitable for complete beginners?
Or should I go find someone to teach me first?

There are lessons and puzzles on the App Hanneke. They are limited if you aren't a paid member, but it's a good place to start.
If you also have a human to help that won't hurt.
