Steve, the California is a great vehicle, the downside is (I'm sure Scribbs will tell you) that they're ridiculously expensive, but residuals are good. I haven't felt the need to upgrade mine after six solid years of use and have been all over the place in it .... that said, they are quite complex vehicles and it helps if you are of a technical mein before buying one, otherwise you could be faced with some big repair bills. Example: The water pump seized on mine earlier in the year (a very common problem - this the drinking water pump) and VW quoted £348.00 for a repair. I bought a genuine VW pump and fitted it myself, cost £39.99. I could have reduced this to £20 if I'd bought the identical pump without VW logo direct from the manufacturers.

I have heard about the development of the electric Cali, it does sound interesting - it may be approaching a six-figure sum though!

6-figs?!!! :-O
Makes the 40-50K electric Disco conversion seem like exceptional value.

Thanks for the comments. I could handle that kind of repair, but the catch is only finding out things like that after the fact :)

I could tolerate the price of the fossil fuel model if I could persuade my mrs to get one while she works in NL and then include it as “removal goods” which are not taxed when she comes back to Norway, but I'm not sure we are allowed to swing that. Some kind of van is definitely called for so I can travel to more running races while I am recently retired but the OH is working 😁

SteveC - I just read an interesting article (prompted by seeing your post) which suggested that many Norwegians use a the electric car as their city runaround, but "range anxiety" means that they keep a diesel vehicle for the weekend trips to the mountain cabin!

Following up, though, is the tax position any more favourable for hybrid vehicles than for pure petrol/diesel? You will see references in recent pages to the Toyota Alphard and there may be others. Don't know if that is an option for you, though?

Unfortunately, hybrids are not taxed as electric cars in Norway. For myself for a year or two I'm half-tempted even to get an older Tesla S as this would let me do overnights to running events. The youtube channel teslabjørn used to do this but I appreciate it's not most people's idea of a camping vehicle 🙂

Just in case anyone ever needs it, this is the eBay ink to the "factory" waterpumps for VW Californias. I have heard of several owners who keep one as a spare:
