Vans either side of me have stuck rocks in front of their wheels. Why have they done this and should I do it too?

They may be extra cautious about the van rolling when the handbrake is off. I think if I remember correctly that you have to drop the handbrake to swivel the driver’s seat around on most VW Cali’s.

All VW Californias since the T5 model certainly, however T5/T6 Transporter conversions use a variety of different seats and I imagine you can swivel some of those without dropping the handbrake. It's a PIA to be honest and we never swivel the driver's seat unless absolutely necessary.

Dare I sully your campervan thread with talk of a motorhome??? 🤔🤣
Would like to pick your collective brains... currently moving the bikes in the cabin and want to sort a bike carrier solution on the back of the van.
Two fundamental options as I see it; fit a towbar and use a tow ball bike rack, or get a bike rack fixed to the back of the van...
Any thoughts??

There's a one-off cost of fitting a towbar, of course.

I got a removeable towbar fitted to our estate car in order to be able to use a bike rack with it. I knew that, unless I go mad and get back into dinghy sailing, I wouldn't want a towbar for any other purpose, so removeable reflected the fact that most of the time it isn't needed. There's a bit of fiddling around each time I want to put the towbar on.

For the campervan, I bought a fiamma rack which pretty much hangs off the left-hand barn door. I think we ended up spending so much on the van that the idea of another £500+ on a towbar didn't really occur to me.

Random thoughts which may not be much use to you!

I suppose that, on a motorhome, you might actually bolt it on permanently, as there's no door at the back?

I suspect that you'll need to think about number of bikes and weight of bikes and look at which racks which meet those criteria are available/recommended?

Hey Boffin. Don’t worry, I’m often in here talking about my caravan! :)

I think synge’s last point is the most important. Also future bikes? E-bikes are very heavy.

Good point, AC. We're not into electric bikes (yet!), but they probably have an appreciable effect on the balance of a campervan or smaller motorhome. And maybe the weight limit too.
