‘My’ LTTs were late too, one often arrives with the goldfinch, which I find a little odd, but it didn’t today

Our LTTs missed out too. Along with a female blackcap that arrived just too late. Pleased to be able to report 2 jays though.

22 chaffs though. That’s wonderful, must have been mayhem! I wouldn’t know where to go to find one down here.

I see in the rspb stats that sparrows are top. Haven’t seen one here in years.

There are a few lapwing back on the fields round here at the moment. Usually back in February, so a bit early, but good to see them.

Not seen any Oystercatcher or Curlew yet. A few of the Golden Plover seem to hang around on the moors for the whole winter.

Red Squirrel
A goldcrest! Less than a metre away on a tree in front of me at eye level. Had a really good look for about 2 mins and saw every detail of its beautiful gold and red crest. Went into my rucksack to try to get a pic for this thread, but it had gone. Probably hopped over to next tree or was investigating a hole in the trunk. I didn't hear it flying away. What a great start to the day.

How lovely, Red Squirrel! Yes, they can be very confiding little birds. Best view I ever had was one maybe 1.5 metres away hopping around in a tree outside my front door, completely unbothered by my presence.

My results: Chaffinch 22 Blue Tit 7 Greenfinch 12

jacdaw, did you really have 22 chaffinches in your garden at one point, and 12 greenfinch? That's not cumulative over the hour?

I left my phone in the garden with the Merlin app recording for 30 minutes yesterday. There weren't any surprises although it did say it had detected a Redwing which I can't say I've ever seen. I didn't do this on purpose, there were a few different birds singing at once and I was trying to determine which was which, and forgot it was there.

I think it might be worth doing again.
