Ronnie, just been out for a walk and spotted what was almost certainly a great spotted woodpecker but the colours didn't look right in flight, as it was lit up by the low afternoon sun. Definitely a thing.

Also saw them DT - much higher up than they usually are over us.

Not birds, but quite a few huge dead salmon in the river next to my house. Post breeding, I guess. A feast for the heron and stoats!

My local bird sightings report keeps telling me of waxwing sightings yesterday in streets a few minute's walk from mine, but of course by the time I hear they've moved on elsewhere. Just did another brief tour of the neighbourhood with no joy. All very frustrating.

Friends of mine watched a flock of about 20 waxwings yesterday by the Hitachi Train factory near us (lots of berries on the hawthorn up there).
