Was walking down the street parallel to mine earlier on the lookout for waxwings and saw a small group of birds in flight which MAY have been waxwings. I was hoping I would get a better view but unfortunately they turned away and headed towards my garden .

Last volunteer session at Caerlaverock WWT today, so we did a morning's work, had lunch and then spent the afternoon in one of the hides. We spotted three waxwings in a tree near the car park just before lunch. Watched them for about ten minutes before they flew off. A great afternoon followed where we saw a golden plover flocking over the salt marsh, a spoonbill, a peregrine, and, to cap it all off, a male hen harrier sat on a post for five minutes. It then flew over the edge of the gorse and marsh and went backwards and forward for a good ten minutes. A thrilling afternoon. |

Waxwings today at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire (accompanied by an influx of camera carrying enthusiasts!). A dozen or so egrets in a water-logged pasture field on my way home too!

Just had another little run around all the local streets where waxwings were reported yesterday and the day before. No waxwings. I am reminded of an incident which happened maybe 30 years ago, in the days of film cameras (younger readers can Google about this). I went to a point on a river in Scotland famous for jumping salmon, and sure enough, there they were, leaping away, a splendid sight. I shot an entire roll of 24 hoping to get the perfect salmon picture. When I got it back from the developers, I found I had 24 shots of patches of water into which salmon may or may not have recently disappeared. But at least I actually got to see the salmon that time even if I have no photographic evidence. |

The more I see people filming and photographing everything makes me less and less inclined to take photographs. This is probably odd as I was a fairly obsessive amateur photographer for 30 or 40 years (film not digi). I just think if you spend your time trying to get the perfect picture (be it a bird, fish or band) you miss out on the actual experience. Not owning a smart phone probably helps! (Not sure this is really relevant here, but, thought it was worth saying.) |

Completely agree. With every word. Sometimes I take a camera, sometimes leave at home purposefully so as to live whatever that day is.
