Saw, well heard first of all, a little bit of commotion on the other side of the road during this morning's run. Looked over to see a crow stealing what appeared to be a juvenile blackbird from the long grass. Parents were not pleased.

I am so excited: I put two bird boxes onto the sheltered apex of my new building. Really quite late, well into Spring, due to building delays. I thought they'd stay empty this year but I just saw a bluetit flying in and out 🥰
Then I went to picj hawthorn blossom on the hill and there was a really really loud cuckoo. So close by, I decided to have a look if I could spot ut. Lo and behold! I have just seen my first ever "live" cuckoo after hearing so many for so many years!

Hanneke, great to spot one! Yes, it's strange how infrequently one actually sees cuckoos. One of the reasons, of course, is that the sound carries a long way - that bird you can clearly here might hardly be visible even if you are looking in the right place.

Curiosity last night, walking back from an evening out at 11pm - two separate sedge warblers singing away in the reed beds, in the dark. Sparser song than in daytime, less frenetic. Didn't know they did that.

I'm delighted that the house sparrows have chicks in our garden next box. I see them flying frequently to and from the feeders and will be keeping my eye out for fledgelings.

We also have regular blue-tit and great tit visitors now. And I've seen two goldfinch that appear to be happy to hang out for a while.

I am mega- annoyed with my (lovely) new neighbours two tom cats. The cats are lovely too but, you can see this coming, all regular nests in my garden have been emptied 🤬🤬🤬
I keep my own cat, who doesn't typically bother with birds, in to protect the birds this time of year. Blackbird, robin and songthrush nests destroyed! It has to be them as this is the first time it has happened!!!

Hanneke, it's squirrels and magpies who do most of the nest predating in our garden.

I have issues with squirrels and magpies too but they seem to be absent this year. Also this is the first year tjis has hapoened and the first year we have these cats. They are also destroying my garden! And having fights with a neighbour's cat: fluff all over AND the have made my little cat utterly fearful to go out :(
