Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Yes, we were thrilled. A prize was offered for first person to identify. I was scratching my head for ages. They've been around for a while and not close enough to get a good look. Recently they've been watching us turn over soil from closer quarters. Everything fits - call, flocking in winter, a faint yellow on back.

When I first saw one (in Bulgaria), the key identification features were the 'jangling keys' call and the dangling legs in flight.

I’ve seen a corn bunting once, to my knowledge, on the cliff top at Dover.

Winter is definitely here. I've just seen the first attempt on my feeders by a Sparrowhawk. Looked too small for an adult female and the wrong colouring for an adult male so I think it was a juvenile.. I often find that it's the juveniles that are prepared to come into what is a relatively enclosed area. Presumably as their hunting technique or lack of is leaving them hungry.

I wonder if a spawk has any predators in a domestic environment, apart from maybe an ambitious / crazy cat or humans? Not many creatures would take on a big female

We have a regular male sparrowhawk visiting, again I reckon it is a juvenile. It is mostly unsuccessful but has had a couple of catches I've seen.

Gossies hate sparrowhawks, DT. I think eagle owls will take them too. Neither of them likely in a domestic setting!
