Blackbird singing this morning. Suspect that the imminent return of chillier days will shut him up soon☹️

Not so sure Steve. Resident birds have been vocal for a week or two here. They know ‘spring’ is coming

A couple of winters ago I changed my phone alarm to birdsong as I felt it would be a more gentle way to wake up. Unfortunately I Pavloved myself into waking when I heard birds singing. The local blackbird at 430am was not popular 😂

My phone ringtone is blackbird song too. Usually ok. But once I was setting out controls for MTB orienteering. It was bluebell time, and a lovely evening. I got distracted by the beauty in the woods and never heard my phone, as it disappeared into blackbird song all around. My friend, who I was helping, was seriously worried as I had been hours! Generally though, everyone loves it when my phone rings ☺️

I mentioned a kingfisher flying along the path ahead of me as I was out running a couple of days ago. Well, in today's episode of 'Interesting Things on the Path Ahead', water rail! Came round a corner and one scuttled across the path just a few feet in front of me, closest I've ever been to one. This was on a stretch of path running alongside the river, with a marsh and scrub (which the bird scuttled into) on the other side. I reported hearing one at this location a couple of months ago, but this was the first I've seen there. It's a smashing spot, just on the outskirts of Norwich, where the River Yare meanders around the city.
A little further on I stopped to watch the parakeets in the poplar trees there. The odd thing is that they've been in this place for quite a while now (I've mentioned this before) but for some reason they don't seem to have spread. I don't know of anyone who's seen them in their gardens and I've never heard them anywhere else here.

I’ve seen parakeets in four places. Kirkby Stephen, Hartlepool, Amsterdam and Den Haag.

Rather an odd array of places but especially in the case of Kirkby Stephen, because I’ve heard a few people mention the colony there, that they don’t necessarily spread. I mean they’re essentially escapees I think in the UK so they should become more spread.

paulcook, I believe they originated in Richmond Park, London, and have spread around the world from there .
