Nice DT. LBBG roost here reported to be at 8800 on Friday night!!! I was out running along the res at twilight on Friday and it was impressive to watch great rafts of them drifting in over the adjacent hills as the sun set behind them. |

Fragile Do Not Bend
I went to a motor racing event over the weekend and it was a struggle to concentrate on the racing once I noticed a small bird of prey was using the giant video screen as a perch from which to survey the long grass below for prey. I’m hopeless at identifying birds of prey and anyway it was difficult to see any details because of the distance and it being silhouetted against the sky. What bird could it have been? I thought maybe kestrel but it didn’t do any hovering, just flew down the grass (not particularly quickly), caught something, then went back to its perch to eat its lunch. |

Fragile, that still sounds typical kestrel behaviour to me. No point wasting energy hovering if there's a good vantage point they can perch on.

Several new lifetime spots for me whilst we were in the Scillies - none of us saw the wrynecks, only Youngest saw the biuethroats, but i was more than content with an Ortolan bunting

Wow, ortolan! Never seen one in this country. Never seen a bluethroat or wryneck anywhere.

Thanks J2R, it did look like the right sort of colour for a kestrel. It was probably delighted to have some new handy perches for the weekend

A solitary swallow which was a nice surprise. Plenty of waders around and shelduck.
