I just heard what sounded like a goose so dashed outside and about 80 pinkies were directly over the house heading West

Pinkies reported through Belper this morning as well DT. Interesting movement to look out for anywhere directly south of Chesterfield are six cranes that since yesterday afternoon have been tracked flying directly south from Northumberland down through North Yorks, over Sheffield and then Chesterfield. They are believed to have come from Scandinavia. |

I saw geese flying over as I finished my run this morning. Couldn’t ID what type they were.

Big noisy skeins are likely to be pink footed geese ie ‘pinkies’ Scibbs. They’re interesting to watch because the skeins are constantly changing / reorganising. They aren’t a solid shape but seemingly in permanent flux. The birds come to Britain in our winter but move from one side of the country to the other through the season. One of my favourite birding sights
