Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Can't get that excited about the prospect of waxwings, a little too far off yet :). But I do intend, if I can, to be a little more attentive this year to migrants hitting the coast which should start happening later this month. Late July and early August is normally a pretty dull period in the birding calendar, but things can get interesting in late August. I think this year I might try to see a yellow-browed warbler, as they often seem to turn up on the coast (although not until September or October normally). Last year I missed so much of the interesting migrant activity because of lockdown.

My rowan tree has nice red ripe berries and Blackbirds are already having a go- in a couple of weeks the berries will probably be gone and there's a good crop. They are never left into the colder days.
Envious of those seeing Swifts , most of which will be gone by mid month--I need to skan the skies or it'll be a year of no sightings at all!
Yellow Browed is a good one to go for J2R...with the right weather at the right time you should be lucky!

All birds and squirrels have been helping themselves to unripe fruit this year. My rowans are barely yellowing and mostly gone. Such a shame...

August 4 and the sky above me is still a-screech with swifts. Won't be too long, though.

Down at garden level, for the past few weeks it's been almost exclusively youngsters on the feeders, little mixed flocks of this year's bluetits and great tits, this morning being joined by long tailed tits. Very charming!

There were 12 sparrows on the lawn just now, 10 of them male. Not sure what they were after, but they seemed to be finding plenty of something to eat.
Wonder where the ladies are

Rosehip, that's 11 more sparrows than I've seen in my garden in the 12 years I've lived here.

We have loads of sparrows at the moment - 20 or so at a time. They seem to have scared off most of the other small birds though as we just seem to be getting sparrows and very little else!

Interestingly, I just came home for lunch and there were at least 50 sparrows feasting on the seeds of my wildflower banks at my entrance! Never seen anything like it!
Mind, that bank has been a wildlife magnet ever since it was created last year ☺️

I've mentioned this before here, but the bizarre thing about my continuing state of extreme sparrowlessness is not simply that the garden feeders are popular with a very wide range of species (including occasionally bramblings, linnets and siskins), but also that house sparrows are very numerous no more than 150 metres away.
