Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I don't know whether it's the same with sparrowhawks, but buzzards seem to have a wide range of plumage variants. May be a raptor thing?

Thanks all. Yup, it was the back and the small size that caught me out, definitely looks far more sparrowhawk like when he gave me the front view.

The bungled hunt gave me an idea it was a youngster, it was unstealthlike I thought it was a wood pigeon at first and the sparrows stayed in the same tree giving it abuse 😀

It’s that time of year when many birds are moulting so they don’t always look like you expect them to. Ducks go through eclipse plumage and males in particular can look very drab

Our visitor was back today, similar to those pics but perhaps a little lighter in colour. Looks like it had stored yesterday's meal or had another victim to devour.

Definitely looks like a Sparrowhawk to me too. I had a juvenile visiting me this time last year and making a right mess of attacks. It got hell from the Blue Tits. Especially when it got mildly tangled up in the rosebush. One particularly irate Blue Tit pretty much sat on it's shoulder (knowing full well it couldn't turn) and hurled abuse into it's ear. I'm not very fluent in "Blue Tit" but I understood the jist very well! 😂

The thing I always remember is that of UK raptors only sprawks and goshawks have the bright yellow eye.
