Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Possibly, was going to try and get a photo but it took off with the remains of its dinner before I had a chance.

Merlin is a moorland special. Unless you live on the edge of the Peak, Dartmoor, NMY etc unlikely to see one in your garden

More likely a sparrowhawk then. Not sure how they compare in size.

Neil, DT is right, does sound like sparrowhawk behaviour. We have them visit our garden and scare the bejesus out of the songbirds. Occasionally we will find a clump of feathers on the lawn where a sparrowhawk has taken out a woodpigeon or collared dove. You see this in woodland walks, too.

Can I have some ID help please. I'm sure it is a sparrowhawk, but the colourings dont look right. Is it a young one perhaps? Bit of a bungled chase this morning of the sparrows.

And it's back, gave me a better view of its front which looks more sparrowhawk like. I guess it must be a young one, it is also tiny compared to ones I've seen before. So a juvenile male perhaps?

Small bird of prey with yellow eyes always say sparrowhawk to me. Especially in a garden. Chasing sparrows.

I agree it might be a juvenile.
