Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Natural bird food is the best and why I leave the Teasels that are on a takeover bid and leave all seedheads and dead plant material over winter. It looks fab through to December, then it becomes quite horrid, but it is a haven for wildlife so it stays... Until the "great cutback" in February.

Thanks ar ... I'll assume, and pay close attention to the bit between Woodside Farm and Moses Dock, if that's where you mean. I've never walked that bit, normally go along and round The Salterns (posh) house and/or Eight Acre Pond. Although it's only when I looked at the map that I knew any of these names.

I have teasels too, currently still in flower. The big hit last winter with the goldfinches was a huge burdock, but there hasn't been any of that this year. Apparently burdock has been known to entangle feeding birds and kill them (thanks for that wiki, I only wanted to know if it was a biennial).

Uh oh! Didn't know that about Burdock! Although medicinal, I keep them out of the garden as too invasive!

There were still swifts here last evening, not expecting them to stay much longer

um, Moses Dock was where I saw it.

Goldfinches love my verbena bonariensis in February.

Visited Barton Turns Marina today and marvelled at how long some birds Grebes? could stay underwater. Also some SandMartins? swooping over the water and then resting on the guttering of new builds.

Driving back saw several birds of prey, one at the side of the road on a rabbit and completely unfazed as the car passed it.

One swift over the house this evening and a spotted flycatcher feeding from my neighbour's roof ridge.
