Fabulous walk this morning, took the bins to get a proper look at the little terns, which was fab. But, hadn't realised that the curlew have returned on mass. Great to see them back. Had a quick group count and I reckon 2 to 3 hundred in number. Also large numbers of oystercatcher are back as well

Watching a great spotted woodpecker on the bird feeder, refusing to be intimidated by two parakeets. The woodpecker is a regular visitor which is always a joy.

I find myself chasing off the parakeets almost as often as the squirrels.

I think I heard a parakeet over my garden at the weekend. Won't be long before they're here, I'm sure.

Two bird events of note over the last couple of days. Firstly, on Sunday, in the reedbeds of a riverside nature reserve, I'm pretty certain I heard a grasshopper warbler singing. It sounded just like one and I can't think what else it might have been, but isn't this very late to be hearing one singing? (Mind you, that probably goes equally for whatever else it might have been).

Secondly, yesterday, as I was sitting on the quayside at Wells-next-the-Sea on the north Norfolk coast, I watched as a cormorant struggled for ages to swallow a quite enormous eel it had caught, trying to reposition it so it could get it down. This involved lots of thrashing the thing about and, puzzlingly, diving below the surface for substantial periods. It managed it in the end. Later on in the day, I saw a spoonbill a couple of times, a bullfinch, some linnets, and lots of diving little terns.

Minsmere is fantastic, Phil. Such a range of habitats, and so many species to see. Well deserving of its reputation.

My sighting of the day has been a Jay that has (at least) twice today appeared below my feeders icking up dropped peanuts. I live in quite an enclosed courtyard and though Jays are resident very close by I've never seen one so close to the house in over 20 years. I think it maybe a juvenile but I'm not completely sure? I'm struggling to find anything that indicates a first year?

The second visit by the Jay that I observed was accompanied by a juvenile GSW and the first Willow Tit I've spotted on the feeders for 2-3 months (and about a dozen juvenile Blue Tits, which seem to have done much better with their second broods than they did with the first ones).

My bird related sighting:
My Speckledy jumping up to catch a robin fledgeling, making off with it and eating it 😱
Mind, I used to have a chicken that caught voles. She would also fight with the cat over her catch!
The most memorable scene being one pulling at either end of a small rodent, ripping it in half 😱
