Main highlight of a rather muddy country run today was a great view of a barn owl quartering a meadow next to the path. I used to see far more of them than I do these days - I don't know what's happened to them round here.
Also yesterday and today, loads of fieldfares in the fields. Interesting to note how well camouflaged they are, in fact - you only really notice them when they move. I was looking at a field having spotted a couple of them and then I slowly noticed that there were in facts dozens and dozens of them.

Very few winter thrushes for me this year. I saw a lonely looking mipit on Friday on our local hill in a load of snow. Tough birds are the ones that stay over winter up on high ground

I shall miss my choughs and little snow buntings this winter.

I think we've got all the Redwings DT, a good smattering of Fieldfares higher up but the Redwings are everywhere at the moment, certainly far more than the last few years. A lot them are quite confiding as well.

I’ve been nowhere to see any in truth but I see more dipper and LTT than thrushes

Lots of LTT but Dippers currently come with a chat with Derbyshire police and a £200 ticket!

Two otters on the Nith in the centre of town. Each relaxing with a fish and having a bit of lunch.
Lots of black headed gulls and a couple of cormorants.

Surelynot, fantastic to see otters! DT, sorry about your winter thrushlessness. I was thinking this was a particularly good winter for them here (certainly more redwings in the garden than normal), but I wonder whether the increased sightings of fieldfares may be more to do with where we're spending our weekend jaunts, with lockdown restrictions, than anything else. Some of the these runs done among fieldfare-laden fields would normally be done up at the coast.

Winter thrushlessness same for me Surelynot! Aside from the first birds I saw in October I have seen none! And haven't seen a Fieldfare either.
