THe weather hasn't been nice though, maybe it took a feel of the wind direction and weather and decided crossing the channel at the moment wouldn't be much fun?

Yes, maybe. Any idea what it's been feeding on? It's not really been living in its normal high rocky terrain where it can drop bones from a height and break them, so I suspect that must form only part of its normal diet. I presume it's been competing with buzzards, kites, carrion crows, etc., for dead rabbits, lambs, sheep, etc.

I wouldn't want to be driving around in a small car with that beast flying above me, if he's hungry.

Our walk last night was like a scene from the birds. Twilight walk and hundreds and hundreds of gulls were flying from inland to the shoreline, mixed in were loads of oystercatchers. Dont know whether that is a daily phenomenon or something to do with the tides/winds but spectacular and spooky to see and hear.

Down here in South East Wales bonners, gulls fly in flocks every evening towards the coast/estuaries of the rivers. The reverse is true every morning..of course! It's a feeding/roosting behaviour--the gulls can be seen at reservoirs and in fields during the day and then it's safer for most to roost at night along the coast. There's food there of course too and some remain at coastal sites day and night.

There are full roosts at several of the reservoirs around here. I always smile when I see lone birds flying back quickly later than the norm as if they’re been busy all day
