I've just not seen a goldfinch around here before J2R - very occasionally I've seen them at theh allotments (which admittedly are only 5mins walk away), and I do seem them in the local fields in the middle of summer, but not seen them quite so urban previously.

Also I've got a couple of squirrel buster bird feeders, which I can confirm do work.

It's very funny seeing them try to get at them!

J2R - very true! I have just ordered a squirrel resistant peanut feeder but I'm betting on the squirrels working out a way in fairly quickly.

The magpies are also fairly omnivorous - they finish off the hedgehog food if any is left in the morning (not that there ever is at the moment, the hedgehogs are eating everything in sight to fatten up for hibernation I think!)

Well, fozzy, enjoy their arrival in your garden. Gorgeous little birds! They seem to be unusual among songbirds in both being great to listen to and look at. OK, they don't have a particularly fine song in the nightingale/blackcap/blackbird mould, but they do make a rather lovely twittering.

Not seen any definitea for a while although fairly certain I saw hirundines in Wensleydale Saturday afternoon. Mind, the weather was so bad they could have been buzzards and I wouldn’t have been sure :-(
