Chiffchaff in the garden this morning. It survived the downpour of yesterday--where DO they shelter to avoid getting really drenched?!

When do bats normally shut up shop for the winter? I've seen loads over the last few days.

Some time in October (like now I suppose!) J2R. I would guess that the ones you're seeing now are fattening up nd taking whatever insects are still about.

Possible Ring Ouzel on the way up to Beacon Tarn during yesterday's Coniston marathon. But not certain enough to tick it! Lots of birds in the woods and on the fells above Coniston, with a mile where there must have been a robin every few metres

Interesting, flanker. I have seen SO many robins this year. I wonder whether the last couple of years have been very good for them.

I hope so. They're still my favourite bird, even if that is a very cliched pov.
The last couple of mild winters have probably been good for their food with more insects surviving?
