I was surrounded by an enormous flock of swallows this morning when I was out checking my cattle, mind you there were lots of flies!

(Ooops - initially posted on the Coronovirus thread by mistake!)

Did someone mention Dippers? šŸ˜

5 of them frolicking along the River Wye towards Monsal Head Bridge this afternoon. 2 Kingfishers, 2 grey wagtails, a robin and a handful of mallards added to a pleasant, if very wet, short walk.

Another bird id question ... initially I thought this was a buzzard. Viewed from a distance and the wy it flew. But then it hovered....

I'm still thinking it was too large for a kestrel, but not a buzzard. Any ideas? Or (just) a big kestrel?
In the New Forest, over open land, happily soaring 1/2 - 1 mile between hovers. No dives or plummeting.

That exactly how o felt a few days ago um.
Looks like a buzzard to me. Apparently (having googled it) they often 'hang' in the air, using the wind which makes it seem like they are hovering.

Stand up and stretch your arms out to your sides with your palms parallel to the ground. Then raise your arms up slightly with your figures spread and at about 30 degrees. Thatā€™s what buzzard wings very often look like (and kite donā€™t)

I would have said Buzzard, their colouring can vary a great deal.

I'm in the buzzard camp too.

Just out of interest I ran your first photo through the 'Merlin' bird ID app (recommended app for not only photo ID'ing, but also as a handy reference tool with calls/songs etc.) and its top choice for 'Best Match' was Common Buzzard.

"my" buzzards seem to hover for short periods - especially when it's windy - that looks like a buzzard to me

Thanks all. I thought it was a buzzard at first, but then it started 'hovering' and that clouded my judgement. But too big for a kestrel.

It was quite a windy day, but also didn't ever come close.
