Surelynot, my guess would be mistle thrushes. I've seen little flocks of them this year.

We get sizeable flocks of mistles on the moors at this time of year - they do look and behave for all the world like fieldfare until I remember it's August...

'Our' buzzards opposite the house do that hovering thing too, and from a distance with nothing to get any perspective from, I do have to think twice!

Great view of a male merlin whilst enjoying a mid-run-commute pint and chips yesterday :-)

I think this is a grey wagtail fledgling that was sitting just outside the back door yesterday. It wagged its tail just as I snapped so the tail is blurry, but there is a bit of yellow there.

Looks right

I associate grey wagtail with water (running water mainly). Do you a have a stream, beck or river nearby?

Lough Erne is one field away. The nearest 'proper' river that flows into the lough is two miles away, but there are probably a few drains that flow in nearer than that. The weather we have had this week means that there is water pretty much wherever you look. I have seen yellow wagtails in the yard before, although the pied is a much more frequent visitor.

We’ve got a virtually tame grey wag that seems to be permanently in the alley behind the shop. With the river Calder and Rochdale canal a few hundred yards away it seems a strange choice!

Thanks for the replies all. These must have been mistle thrushes.

Three swallows came into the barn while I was out there working today, I hope they were saying goodbye and making sure they knew exactly where they would be returning to next spring. :)
