Re Greenfinch-- after a few years of local scarcity they began being more evident again last year and are holding territories in several places already this year (Cardiff West and South). Chiffchaff singing in my garden this morning but unusually, no sign of Willow Warblers in garden this year.

I'm seeing more greenfinches in the garden than a couple of years back. Hope the population has made a decent recovery.
I was talking to my next door neighbour yesterday (from more than 2 metres away), and she said she has had treecreepers in her garden a few times, so I'm really hoping we get one of those soon. The trouble is we don't really have the type of trees which are worth creeping, but maybe it'll give it a go anyway, just to please me.

Very confiding WHitethroat this morning. Glimpsed it and heard it in a thick bramble patch, was still processing what I'd heard and thinking almost 100% that was a Whitethroat when it came and sat on a fence strand about a metre from me it then kept heading back into the bramble patch before returning to it's perch in front of me. It did this 3 or 4 times before I moved on. Beautiful little bird close up, so rare you get to see one like that.

I remember a keen birder telling me he had a wood warbler perch on his shoulder in the Strid Woods once

I've had a new to me bird visit my garden bird table twice recently the first time I thought I just miss saw! Its slate grey, bigger than a robin but smaller than a blackbird. I only saw it momentarily but the overriding memory is that it was "flat" shaped along its back. Sorry if that doesnt make sense but that's the picture in my mind? Any thoughts?

Assuming it wasn't anything exotic like a shrike(!), possibly a spotted flycatcher, or maybe the back of a ♂ wheatear? Neither sound like a great match, but both are about the right size and as it was only a brief glimpse...

Both Wheatear and Spotted Fly are very possible at D2's and Wheatear are certainly around the area (I've see several within a couple of miles this year). Some female Bullfinches can also appear very grey, particualrly if the light isn't helpful and I always think of them as having a "flat" back with no neck. They're about the right size but even if you don't spot the black cap and tail I would expect to see the white rump when they flew off?
