Little auk is a good call but the other that springs to mind is manx shearwater. Ever so cute, whatever it is, and a good spot.

Scale versus common species is a great market. A goodeposit examples is the images here alongside a pair of mallard. Little auk is a misnomer. Micro auk would be a better bet!

House sparrow, starling, blackbird, redshank, mallard, kestrel, buzzard are all good "markers". Oh and a jam jar for little owl heart

don't think it's a little auk - the white comes too high up around the neck/head.

😀 we kept saying penguin - but only knew that we'd never seen one before. Slightly smaller than coot, very busy flapping/preening but couldn't see anything obviously wrong except on its own, out of context. Looked very like your little auk picture, hadn't thoght of that, couldn't see beak, more likely m.shearwater. Very very appealing whatever it was, thanks for help & I'm never going out without my binoculars again despite their weight

It's a guillemot - lovely part of the world for birding round there!
