What Flanker said ^ easy scrambling and a nice, elegant way to explore Haystacks

I only have one arm that works. Would I need both?

Also, Jock is more into like old people nice scenic walking than climbing anything. Will he be ok?!

.......thinks about gatecrashing on the 28th :)

The Gap route up to Haystacks from Buttermere got the better of youngest last year, so haystacks is unfinished business

Grasmere Gallop is on 2nd June - is that what you meant?
10k and 17.5k. Std races/runs I think, not the one straight up the hillside to the tarn and back,
Can recommend Haystacks and Fleetwith Pike. From the top of Honister, it's not much of a climb. From Buttermere, via Scarth Gap, enough to warm you up. May need to get there early for parking on a bank holiday weekend.

Old man - you can park at the old quarry at the very end of the road and o up & down in about 2 hours - or go past Levers Water, up Prison Band to Swirl How and along the ridge to Old Man. Also divert back round the other side to Goat Water and Walna Scar Road if you want a loop rather than up & down by the same route. Could run sections of it if that adds to the appeal ...

Enjoy

eL Bee!
There are plenty of 'old man' options up the Scarth Gap way to Haystacks from Buttermere (Septuagenarians with sod**g poles seem to get up it!!) as well as the more adventurous, "3 points of contact and don't fall" variations ;)

Yes Grasmere Gallop. Me and Jock entered the 17k today (I'm just there to jog and enjoy the scenery without having to think about making up a route myself, I'm hoping I'm not supposed to race anything!!!!)

That's very helpful um about Old Man, we'd probably do the up and down in 2 hours thing but will look at the other options too, would they be significantly longer?

eL Bee!, you can both show us these 'old man' options, not the adventurous ones. I don't want any adventures ;) You know far better than me which is the best way to go, so I'll follow you :) It needs to start at that Fish Inn place though because Baldy will probably need to be in the Fish Inn at the end!

Swirl How will add time - but the descent via Goat Water is probably about the same time - longer distance, but faster walking, or running.
Car park is at SD 288 970 - saves a mile each way from Coniston town.

Our visit to the Duddon Valley a few weeks ago gave us a chance to explore a quiet corner of the Lake District, and our first trip up Dow Crag - we'll be back next year to do a bit more exploring.
We're up in the Keswick area in 3 weeks time - from one extreme to the other :-)
Will try to do a bit of exploring of unvisited fells while away, but have in-laws with us (combined age 183 :-o ) so may have to do some easy pottering as well

R4R, you're right - as you head further SW from Dow Crag and into the Duddon Valley and the Dunnerdale Fells you encounter a whole new level of tranquility and beautiful landscapes. It's one of my favourite areas, I really do recommend pushing on down past Walna Scar and down into Broughton Mills, it's truly idyllic. Lots of Birketts to bag thereabouts too :-)

I've recently taken over as the registrar for the Cumbrian Traverse which (coincidentally) starts in Broughton Mills :-) Must get round to doing it ourselves one day, every time we've tried it's invoked the wrath of the weather gods and then some!
