It's definitely a Thing. But I'm not sure how many Lakeland paths have been done this way.

I've heard of it Roo (maybe a northern thing?) but not for horse trails, more for hoomans or sheeps

That's a new one me Roo. I've not knowingly come across a path floated on sheep fleeces. Though on the LL100 a 2 or 3 years ago there was a path that was rather more sheep than it's fleece! Something quite a few didn't discover in the dark until they were stood on it!

Eeeeeeewwwww.

I did think I'd made it up until all these people on the horse groups started talking about it.

Maybe I'll have an experiment set up for next winter.

ff - I suspect the pathway may be a lot more attractive to walkers than to runners!

Re longevity - we asked ourselves exactly the same question yesterday. Even Venice, on its 60-feet-long wooden piles, is beginning to sink, and I doubt the engineers have come up with anything as durable as that! (I’ve understood the reason for the area having fence posts instead of stone walls is that everything up there sinks eventually?)

A bit more googling shows other paths still being made that way - interesting.

I always thought it was interesting. I do wonder if the fleece rots eventually but perhaps being on peat makes decay slow. I do wonder how it's going to play out for the horse people and their horse paths on clay soil.

I still really want to try it though.
