Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Well, you could argue that hurdles and steeplechase are just slower ways to run. :)

IMHO track cycling seems to be the sport with the most unnecessary events. I still can’t get my head around all the different events and what the point is of several of them.

Has anyone ever considered a combined field event of javelin + shot + discuss + hammer? Either add or the totals together or points for placings.

I've also wondered why there's not a motorsport Olympic:, F1, moto, powerboats, plane racing, bike stunts, etc.

I mean, it's not environmentally friendly but that's a different question

How about a running equivalent of the Keirin - a 5000m where the athletes have to run behind someone in a motorised wheelchair for several laps. 😅

Such as?

Cycling got hammered in the olympics and had to reduce the number of events.

Individual pursuit, the kilo/500m time trial for example got dumped.

Because they are wasteful.

And not sports.

I've had that thought in the past. And a multi-event for sprints (say a combo 100m, 200m, 400m) MD (400m, 800m, 1500m) and even a 5k / marathon combo? Or at least relays in those sorts of ideas so that the sprinters don't get all of the medals. Could do a HJ / LJ / TJ / PV medley or multi event too.

The thing with SC and hurdles is at least that mimics some concept of real world running and you're still trying to do it as fast as possible.

Agree that cycling has a lot of similar events, but even there there is quite a difference between the type of rider that can win the various different types of races.

I think with all these multi-event ideas you are effectively reinventing the heptathlon and decathlon....

Scratch race vs Keirin for example. To the lay person like me it seems like the only difference is the motorbike.
