I was sceptical about climbing being in the Olympics but now I've seen the format I'm really impressed with it. I don't see much difference in principle between the fastest along a track or the fastest up a wall.

Football is the sport that most tarnishes that "pinnacle of sport" concept at the Olympics. But then I have a general downer on football, so I would say that anyway.
The "pro" sports like golf and tennis are tough to get well incorporated into the Olympics though; with national quotas in place the fields will always be slimmer than the big major events and that does diminish them a bit - if it's "easier" to win a gold in those events than it is to win one of the Majors then it does take the shine off a bit. But as you say, fozzy, the feedback from the players who did attend did suggest they were 100% bought into the Olympics and really wanted those golds and enjoyed being part of the whole event.
Climbing needs to get better coverage and wider diversity of participants, but I agree it generally is a worthy inclusion. Undoubted athleticism, speed, head to head competition etc.

"I've also wondered why there's not a motorsport Olympic:, F1, moto, powerboats, plane racing, bike stunts, etc." Because they are wasteful. And not sports.
e-sport isn’t a sport but it’s going to be in the olympics…..

Very spectacular and takes up next to no space in a not huge city square, just vertical running innit?

I'm on the fence on e-sports. Whilst there's relatively little physical "effort", there is timing, coordination, tactics, etc at play. And it is undoubtedly the way that the world is going so I can't fault the Olympics for trying to be inclusive.

The trouble with football is that quite literally hundreds of millions of people play it, billions watch it and love it. Every other sport is second by a very, very long way. Athletics way, way down on even that.
I am not so sure the Olympic movement, that is all about physical activity should include esports, however skillful or inclusive they are. In the UK and increasingly the crest of the world, sitting on your arse kills people in huge numbers.

Like I say, I'm on the fence about it. I don't think there is any doubt that e-sports is hugely popular, both as a participator and spectator "sport". And forecasts only suggest it is getting bigger.
