It's an interesting argument fozzy.

In one respect, it makes absolutely no difference. But then makes medal tables unduly weighted because well, Mr X, can swim and wins 9 medals, so his country then dominates the tables. And also the arguments about greatest Olympian, etc, etc, is completely flawed because some people cannot win more medals.

So the flip side is, running is running, swimming is swimming, and taking to an absolute extreme just one medal for each, etc. Look at the Ancient Olympics, and the Greeks had literally just one event for years and years and years, and maxed out at 20 in total. Though not all were that totally different events.

Each gold medal at a multi sport championship has, almost by definition, a different value in many senses so there'll always be a lack of parity. Number of worldwide participants, number of competitors in the event, ability to be multi-medal winning etc etc. It's not "fair".

I get (unreasonably!) irked by the volume of swimming medals simply because the same people commonly win multiple medals in a way which is just not achievable in other sports. But being the sort of swimmer than can do 50, 100, 200, different stroke, medley etc is just part of swimming. It's only when they are consolidated with equal weight into a medal table that it is of any real consequence. Plus, I don't really enjoy watching swimming, but when the same issue is present in track cycling which I do enjoy I don't get quite so upset by it :-)

Broadly I think press / TV coverage tends to get the presentation of that imbalance right; we think of Sir S Regrave as being on a par with Phelps, for example, as even though their medal hauls are different sizes the scale of their achievements have some ability to be compared.
