I fixed my rates at the end of October 2023. Prices per Kw/H have come down since then, so I am a bit out of pocket. Except the standing daily charges have gone up, so I'm probably breaking about even at the moment. If everything goes down again, I'll lose out, but not by a great deal. And if the price of the energy goes down, but the standing charge goes up, it'll be pretty much status quo. And a lot can happen between now and Oct 2025.

interesting Dave, so when you fix tariff you also get to fix the standing charge? I’m really, really surprised by that tbh, I just don’t see how the supplier can hedge that cost to provide a fix for you. I’m still not fixing, yet. Seems to me that the cap has to fall again at the next re-calc. Maybe ahead of next winter. Maybe…. |

My understanding was that the tariff is fixed but the standing charge is variable, but Dave can clarify. None of the fixes have tempted me yet. I figure that with summer allegedly approaching, demand and thus tariffs will reduce somewhat. The test will be next winter and whether it's a harsh one not just here but across Europe, and what the situation is in Ukraine. |

I'd have to look back and see what I fixed at. I was only going by what is on the Eon site now, so I may be wrong. But it is less than the cap maximum. I'll record the current level for posterity, and see what happens next time.

Time of Day pricing is coming for all: bbc.co.uk Said it would happen.... Means everyone will have to have a smart meter, even those who hate them for some reason! |

Does that mean the power companies will have to make smart meters available for all?

If ToD pricing comes in, then it's the perfect time for them to scrap the standing charge too. I know that many have campaigned against this for some time, but as ML has pointed out, there are some subtlties that mean it's not straightforward to do so - because if SC is removed and put into unit cost, then some vulnerable users (e.g. home medical equipt) will suddenly get v high energy bills. The solution as ML also points out is to put these users onto a special tariff subsidised by govt. The issue there is that this falls into the govt area of interest and the SC is under the privue of Ofgem, meaning the two need to talk to each other and do joined up thinking. And under this particular govt, joined up thinking ain't gonna happen. |

If this came in, that may be the driver to change my mind on a smart meter. Up until now I have seen no benefit and been put off by the reliability issues. Whether or not the issues are real, I have no current reliability issues and the current approach works fine for me.
