Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

If you are doing meter readings, how is it too much?

Because they do not take my readings into consideration until a month later and keep over-estimating...

I wonder why I give them readings at all, as they are ignored...

The negative temperatures this week have been challenging in our house.

It’s a 1930s bungalow with poor insulation and I have mentioned before a number of design challenges to overcome to actually insulate any better than it is.

Our heating has kicked in the last few nights as it dropped below 12 degrees. My wife got up at six and heating been on since then and only just getting to 18 degrees now. Luckily my credit balance will cover the cost.

Anyhoo my question was who could I ask to find out what our options could be. I don’t want a salesman but an overall view on how bad our insulation is and what we could consider

Thanks, will have a good look at that over the weekend.

The guy next door moved in 10-15 years ago and bought from the estate of the son of the original owner. next to nothing has changed since it was built c1933. They have no heating of any sort and would be as well living in their garden :-O

We have also been impacted by the cold snap, we live in an 1820s barn conversion in the Yorkshire Dales and this is our first winter. I had a peak in the oil tank yesterday and was surprised by how much we've used since topping up at beginning of November.

Old, poor quality housing is such a big problem with energy costs and sustainability. Stone is a terrible building material unless there’s plenty of insulation built in (which usually wasn’t the case until recently). Our converted chapel had holes you could see through when we moved in, builders foam and draft excluders are a useful first step but there’s a limit to what can be achieved without a major rebuild. Our main living area was about 6C for a few days when we had the beast from the east a few years back, to be fair we still had an undiscovered hole in the roof at that point and its not been as bad since I sorted that! A cold easterly coming off the moor is still quite challenging…but at least our (semi-detached) neighbour heats one end of the house :-)

I got up to the bathroom in the night a few nights ago and accused Mrs Axe of leaving the heating on. I had to eat some humble pie when I established it was on because it had dropped below the 12 degrees setting which is unusual. Might need to think about the setting it is at. However, here we are with heating on since 6am with a target to get to 20 degrees and its only just reached 18.5, so maybe I need it to keep warmer than 12 overnight
